If doctors can lose their license to work in state X and move to state Y to work how does one find his status?

Question:
I don't want to get surgery from a physician who has a license to practice in my state but who at an earlier point in time lost a medical license in a different state due to his/her malpractice.

Answers:
You can write to your state's Board of Medical Examiners (or the equivalent). They should have the information for you. Or, if the doctor has the diploma on the wall where he or she received his or her M.D. degree, you can contact that state's Board of Medical Examiners to see if there have been any complaints or suits filed against them. Also, the County Medical Society would have that information, as well as asking the hospital where the doctor practices or has surgical privileges.
You can also ask that doctor up front if their license is valid in every state where they have practiced....that might work! This is a tricky problem - if you have any qualms about a particular doctor, trust your gut and get another opinion!
Good luck!
