Is vegetative state part of the coma process and does anyone get better in this state? Responsive to things.?

Question:
Apparently he just came out of coma a week ago but he has been responding to me for a while. How do they know he's not still in a coma? He puckers when I tell him to for a kiss. He crys when I talk about accident or grandson he was close to. He looks pissed and scared when I talk of his motorcycle accident. I just don't understand and hoping that with time, he will be more like himself. Still no movement in lower extremeties. On EEG's they show that it looks like brain is normal but not sure if there could be something else wrong since he isn't responding the way the want him to. Is vegetative state a part of coming out of a coma and will he progress? He did have spinal cord injury but neck back together and I have asked for them to do more testing to see if anything has changed with spinal cord since they put his neck back together.

Answers:
If there was a head injury you can see many types of reactions. It can be a long process & you may not know for awhile just how the recovery will go.
