My son has ADHD. You don't say how old your child is, and as with all children, punishment should vary by age. Here is some general information.

The best thing you can do is to stay calm and set firm boundaries. Most ADHD kids have problems picking up on social cues because they are moving too quickly (mentally or physically) so they tend to get in trouble more, but they usually don't see it coming. Be very clear in your expectations and the consequences if they misbehave. Then if they do misbehave make sure that you follow through. An important part of disciplining is to have -them- tell -you- why they got in trouble, that way they are truly understanding what causes problems.

I won't get into the spanking/non-spanking argument, but spanking ADHD kids usually doesn't work. They may not understand what caused the spanking so it seems to come out of left field. A child that is spanked that doesn't understand why, suffers the same mental anguish that a child that is randomly spanked, for no reason, experiences. They tend to have more stress and may actually rebel and behave worse because they feel like they will get spanked anyway.

Any child with ADHD is unaware of what they are doing. Where is spanking going to get you?. The only reason you would do it is out of sheer frustration. In no way will it bring him/her in to line!

The only way you can really handle it is with understanding of the illness, patience and a great friend who will listen and give you a hug when times are really bad!!

Each child is different and has different levels of ADHD. Speak to your doctor and a group who will offer you the support and understanding you need.

Yes i had them when I was little and it never hurt me. Todays kids if they will do time out and it works then thats good but if not I think an old fashion spanking will do the trick. I don't think you should beat a child but if they think you mean business most of the time you don't even have to give them a spanking.
