looks to me that your friend is in some state of paralysis and may still have some cognitive function. it is imperative that they work towards increasing these abilities so that they may if not in fact heal to higher levels of functioning. perhaps they got the diagnosis wrong and need to work things out with communication.

Sounds like his brain was injured and he is unable to speak and maybe he is unable to form thought on his own at this time. He may be able to answer questions but the part of his brain that makes him speak and generate thoughts is damaged. I hope you are able to speak with his nurse doctor or family member soon. It may be helpful to know if there is any way you can help your friend improve.
