One of your many rights as a patient, is to have effective pain management. Is there another doctor that can fit you in at the same office? Otherwise, call your doctor's office & explain to the nurse that you need to get in sooner or you'll resort to the ER. You have the right to be treated for undue pain.
Wow, I hope its not too bad for you. Since you didn't mention the cause its hard to know what to do, but I would say if its that bad, go to the ER get something good for it and then change doctors.
The answer to your question would be based upon where your pain is and what is causing it..I can't personally give advice on whether you should seek immediate attention or wait unless I have more complete information. However, if the problem is chest pain, or pain radiating in to your left arm, shoulder, or neck, you really should visit an ER immediately, as they are signs of a possible heart attack. If the pain is in an extremity, it may be perfectly fine to wait a few days. It really depends on where the pain is, what's causing it, and how much you can tolerate. If you don't want to wait, a redi-care, urgent care, or emergency room is always an option, especially if your pain was from an acute injury or accident.
It all depends on where your pain is and what is causing it. Its often encouraged to try over the counter medications first to help alleviate the pain. It may not take it away entirely, but it may make it managable until you can go and see your doctor. Depending on where you live, you can wait up till 4-6 hours in a waiting room before you get seen in an ER. And even then, you are not guaranteed to find a source of the pain or a cure, let alone receive any pain medications other then OTC meds. I've seen people come in after waiting for hours and hours and receive nothing more then motrin or tylenol during their ER visit.

I'm not trying to discourage you from going to the ER, but I could probably be of more help if you describe your pain in more detail. But if you feel you need to go to the ER, then by all means go. Feel free to IM or Email me
