I have leg pains that occur about once a month. What is the cause and how can I help ease the pain?

Question:
I swim 2-5 times a week on a swim team. I rarely run. I bike whenever I don't swim. Some say it is shin splints, yet I don't understand how that could be. It feels like a headache in my calf muscles. It is a constant grueling pain. Yesterday, it started when I woke up and didn't go away until I fell asleep.

Answers:
I have the same problem and the only thing I can find to cure it is to either take an aleeve or put icyhot on the spot and elevate my legs. You should also eat more bananas they have lots of potassium and they say you can get them from not having enough.

Other Answers:
try stretching your muscles. it could be something in your back, maybe a nerve getting pinched. you would have to ask a doctor or something. try asking a physical therapist.

if swim you that often i don't think that your leg can cause you any pain, see a doctor , it could be something else maybe you have poor circulation or you pulled something. go to the emergency room.

I get knee aches about once a month or so, and it sounds pretty similar to your case. What I've noticed is that the pain usually comes with the first day or so of menstruation. Try to track down when your pains occur each month to see if you can detect a pattern.

As for easing the pain, I apply heat to my leg. In my case, I also drink some boiled ginger water with brown sugar dissolved. This is a classic Chinese medicine that improves circulation during menstruation, so that the blood flows out more smoothly, thereby reducing cramps in the lower body. If you're seeking a much quicker solution, tylenol/advil should also do the trick. If it is in your CALF MUSCLE then it is NOT SHIN splints

You may be having some dehydration issues.
I know that everyone would yell out potassium eat bananas, but I am telling you different.

Try some pretzels or chips or any other salty food, and what ever beverage that DOES NOT contain alcohol or caffine.

If you have ever had a drop of sweat get into your eye and burn like all ___ you know that it is salt that you are losing.

Now Both salt and sugar will retain fluids BUT it is the salt and potassium that control muscle contraction and relaxation.

Try it next time and see if it doesn't relieve it quick.
