These are the things that cut my occurences from at least one a month down to two or three a year.
Increase your Lysene intake (supplements available at the pharmacy)
Avoid excessive sun exposure and always wear sunscreen.
Use Blistex or Carmex anytime you're out in the sun or wind.
Keep hydrated.dehydration is a big factor in triggering an outbreak
Eliminate peanuts from your diet.. I know it sounds crazy, but for some people even those not allergic to any type of nuts, peanuts make them have more outbreaks.
Ask your doctor for a prescription for a 5%topical Aciclovir cream (Zovirax). it's the same drug as one of the daily suppressive therapy pills, but you only use it when you feel that achy or tingly feeling that means you're getting a sore. if you use it fast enough, it can often prevent the sore from erupting and cuts the healing time to two or three days. Because it's topical, it has less chance of causing liver problems than the pills do and since you only use it when you need it, it's far less costly
Throw out any lipstick or lip balm you used within 3 days of having a sore.

This is a type of allergy.

When you're out in the sun, open a Vitamin E capsule and spread it in the area where you get fever blisters. It really works! As far as getting one when you have a low-grade fever, I don't think there's anything you can do to stop them, but if you feel one coming on, Denavir (a prescription creme) can help you get rid of them before they come out.

experience with fever blisters
I'm 55 years old and I've been getting fever blisters since I was 8 years old. Last month I had 5 on my lips. This week I got 1. There is a prescription pill that you take once a day ( its for the other kind of herpes too ) you can take as a preventative method. I was prescribed them and I never took them cause sometimes I can go 2 mobths without getting them so, I feel why take a pill. Its uo to you to decide then go to the doctor and they will prescribe it if you want. I know how you feel, their horrible.
Go to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist, most will recommend Abreeva or something like that, you can purchase it over the counter. A little expensive but it works pretty fast.
