why do my ears itch so bad?

Some people just have itchy ears. Generally it is caused by dry ear canals. When our ear canals dry out, they tend to develop tiny cracks. These can either get infected, or just become inflamed. There are several methods to help alleviate the itching. You can try to keep the canals moist by applying "sweet oil" which is available at most pharmacy's. you accomplish this using a q-tip. This helps keep the canal moist and helps prevent the cracking. The second method is to use a drug such as "Elocon Lotion" which is mometasone furote. This is a mild steroid that decreases the inflammation and thus the "itching". The down side of this medication is that it is based in alcohol and if you have sores or cracks in your canal, until they have healed, it can cause quite a bit of burning. Also since it is alcohol based, when you first drop the drops in the ear canal, it is cold so I recommend holding the bottle in your hand for a minute or two to warm it to body temperature. Although it is very tempting, avoid sticking anything in your ear to scratch the itch. This only opens sores in your ears and make your ears itch and hurt more.

When I was little, my mother used to tell me that I had potatoes growing in ears.
Try wetting a fairly large swab of cotton, not a q-tip, with peroxide and place in your ears for a bit. Large enough not to get lost among the potatoes. Be careful when you rinse shampoo and conditioners. residue from these products can be an issue. If they're clean and residue free and still itch try Benedryl. If that doesn't help see a doctor.
