May be due to any local abnormality surrounding the thumb (injusry/chemicals/insect bite), or nerve injury. Should consult the doc if it stays for a while.
I have no idea how a surgery on the left shoulder could affect nerves going to right hand EXCEPT if there was any perioperative trauma to the right shoulder too! If anyone knows any other ways.. please let us know.
When it starts turning black better plan a visit to the DR. Until then just watch it.

someone bit my wrist before really hard before about 2 years ago and ever since then the inner part of my thumb is numb, i still can't feel it and apparently when i was bitten it destroyed a nerve or sumtin so its kinda permanent
Pinched or damaged nerve. Don't blame the thumb, it can be anywhere in the body. Nerves are interconnected. I had rotor cuff surgery and lost feeling in 2 fingers in my right hand. Surgery was on my left shoulder. CAN'T BE HELPED.
Wife had broken bones in same accident and after collar bone surgery Dr checked to see where and how much feeling had been lost over all. And now thinks there's a staff infection where he put in repair part. Going to have to take it out....
