How do I find a portable suction machine to help clear the throat of a choking person?
Question:
I heard about a "portable suction machine" that some ALS patients use who have swallowing issues. Does such a machine exist, how much are they, and where do I find them?
Thanks!
Answers:
I would probably avoid buying a suction unit until you talk with his doctor. You can really hurt him if you don't use it correctly. Another poster had mentioned a standard french catheter being too small to grab a chunk of food, which is also true. Until you speak with his doctor, tell him to chew his food thouroghly and take small bites. you can REALLY hurt him with the suction unit unless you have been trained.

I am not sure about the specific type that ALS patients use, but a suction machine may be rented through any Medical Supply Co.
Also, encourage your Dad to take small bites, chew well and long, drink lots of fluids with his meals, avoid the meats most likely to get stuck such as roast, brisket, ribs, & steak. This will help in avoiding the choking. The catheters on most suction machines are not going to be wide enough to grasp a piece of meat and suck or grasp hold of it strong enough to pull it out. I am really not sure how much help a suction machine will be. They are most helpful for thick secretions and mucus
