What are the purposes for the doctor prescribed drug of Neurontin?

Question:
My physician prescribed this to me to relieve some of the discomfort associated with chronic back pain. I've looked it up on the internet and see that it is commonly prescribed for siezures. Is this also an effective drug to relieve back pain as well, or was this perhaps prescribed in error. I've had steroid injections in my lower back an gotten some relief. I would really like to hear from those with knowledge of the drug Neurontin as well as those that have had the steroid injections for back pain and what kind of results you have experienced with both. Thankyou!

I have seen Neurontin prescribed often for neuropathic pain that is unrelieved by other medications. It appears from reviewing these links that there is a bit of controversy going on regarding its use.I do not have personal knowledge of the steroid injections but anecdotally have heard that they do not offer a long term solution and the steroidal drugs used also come with a laundry list of side effects.I have suffered back pain in the past and the only treatment that I advocate or that has provided any real relief is chiropractic treatment. A good chiropractor will evaluate your backs condition using x-rays and possibly MRI which youve likely had done already anyway, and advise you on some alternative options.

Other Answers:
Though its most commonly used as an anti seizure medication, Neurontin is now increasingly used to help control chronic low back pain. It can be especially useful in patients with nerve pain caused by degenerated discs.

Anytime you question the validity of a prescription, contact your doctor and ask why they gave you that particular medicine.

they had me on it for a while too. it was suppose to help with the nerves sending signals of back pain to the brain. thus no signals no pain. my problem was not corrected by Neurontin (because of nerve damage) but i have had surgery and pain therapy which has relieved alot of the more intense pain..now if i could get rid of the constant nagging pain i will be happier. have to wait out the nerve regenerating process. good luck Neurontin was originally made for controlling seizures. They have found that Neurontin has good side effects with include the control of nerve pain. It helps, I can't say that it controls it. It is also a mood stabilizer and I have seen it used in the psych area and it has had good effects on several of the residents. I have also seen it prescribed to diabetics that suffer from neuropathy (nerve pain). There are many reasons for this medication and you should ask your doc, he could be more specific. I never had the steroid injections in my lower back. They went from 6 weeks of staying in bed and physical therapy to surgery. That has been 16 yrs ago. It was a good thing for me but it is different for everyone. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
