My 2yr old son has had a fever for 3days. Dr says no virus. What could be causing it?

Question:
I've given him Motrin and it will break but come back again. It's reached 103 twice. Dr. also said it could be an infection but didn't find one and didn't prescribe anything. He could be teething, but I haven't known of teething fevers being this high. His appetite is okay but tires easily. He's still playing but I can tell he doesn't feel good.

Answers:
If a child's fever lasts for more than two days it's serious. Talk to a different doctor before your son's condition gets worse.

Other Answers:
Please take him to a doctor immediately. Some things you cannot cure over the internet!
Find another Dr. quickly.
heat exposure?
TEETHING... git a second opinion, please. blessed be
Seek a second opinion for another doctor.
I say, your doctor made a mistake, and you should get a second opinion with another doctor. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
i think u need to stay home with him until the fever is gone. if he throws a fit about not wanting to go to bed, u have to make him. he needs all the rest he can get. have him drink a lot lot lot of water. i really feel for u and hope it goes away
GET HIM TO THE HOSPITAL ASAP!!
GO 2 DA DOCTOR QUICK! NEVER NO IT MAY LEAD HIM TO DIE! QUICK NOW!
the fact that its about a million degrees outside
Usually it is teething. but if it hits 103 you shoud definitely take him straight to the emergency room. High Temperatures can cause slight brain damage in children that young..
I was babysitting once and the child was healthy and happy ALL day and then about an hour before the parents came home he started to cry and feel ill and then he started burning up. I called the parents and they came straight home. i didn't ever hear what made his temp rise that fast and that high

Good luck and I hope he feels better!
Well, the doc is being cautious because too many antibiotics can be just as bad as none at all, if he's STILL feverish, take him back to the doc.
If your doctor really said "no virus", you should find another doctor. How would he know that there is no virus? He cannot check your son for every possible virus, so that would not be a responsible thing for him to say.
Try getting a second opinion because that is a very high fever and ur baby can have a seizure from the fever being so high.My daughter had a high fever like that and the Dr. said id I would have to it a little longer she probably would had seized.
get a second opinion! your child's health is nothing to play around with!
That doc is stupid. Find a new one, and if it spikes high again, take him to the ER>
If it's that high, it's definetly not good. Just try to keep his temperature down as much as you can. bathing him in cool water, give him lots of fluids. Hopefully what's causing this will go away very soon. If it's not gone by tonight, go to another doctor. It might be an ear infection, or it could be teething. One thing is for sure, your doctor shouldn't be dismissing it so easily. Try to find a new pediatrician.
Praying for your son.
Hey I found this post ,&answers kinda like yours check it out 'But you may change doctor and get second opinion as well .
My little one has been running between 103-104 degrees for going on 3 days now. The pediatrician saw her, dx'd a bad virus, no antibiotics and gave me Advil Jr.nothing is working to bring it down. Tylenol, Motrin.no effect. My neighbor, an RN suggested putting potatoes in vinegar and putting them on her forehead (didn't work) and alcohol rubs (made her throw up.) I'm getting a little frustrated as nothing seems to be working and she's so miserable. I called the doc again last night and she said just to wait it out, but I'm not real happy with that. If anyone has a good home remedy, please post it! Thanks.
it could just be an ear infection but go get a secound opinion because if u dont then something could happen.. maybe that dr. doesnt kno what hes talking about!!
Definitely get a second opinion. Try the Emergency Room or Urgent care. My dtr had a fever that would come down with tylenol/motrin but the second it wore off, her fever came back. She would eat a little but got to the point she wasn't hungry. We saw the doctor twice, and finally went to the ER and it turned out she had a urinary tract infection.

Don't wait because they shouldn't have to suffer with the fever. Something is definitely wrong.
SECOND OPINION!! that is VERY serious. Cool your child off immediately.. A/C, fans, take his shirt off, give him water (not too cold). take him to the ER. Teething at two? Shouldn't he have all his baby teeth already?
A fever is your bodys way of telling you something IS worng somewhere. 103 is a high fever. If your Dr won't help, take him to the emergecny room. (they are obligated by law to OFFER financial assistance to all) so don't let the cost stop you.

I've never even heard of a teething fever. But I suppose every chiild is different. Take him to the ER and find out what is causing this fever. Don't let it go on and on and on. This is your child and you have a RIGHT to be demanding. So Demand some answers.
A fever that goes on for days and days, can cause damage. That doens't mean it will but it CAN depending on how high and how long it's duration.
Most likely its a fever of unknown origin. My son was diagnosed with that when he was very young. The fever is actually a good sogn that his immune system is doing its job. Its fighting off something that it recognizes as foriegn. Just watch him. Moms know best. If he acts ok.give it a couple more days, if he seems generally ill, id get a second opinion. Did they check his urine? Lots of times UTI's are tricky to find. You can alternate Motrin with tylenolevery 3 hours. My youngest son weighs 35 pounds and is 3, so the dose for him is 1 1/2 tsp of Motrin and 160mg. of Tylenol. We instruct parents to do that in the ER all the time. Also, a lukewarm spongebath will reduce the fever too. Make sure its not cool though. Only do that if his fever has a hard time breaking. If he is comfortable and playing, then as long as the fever is between 100-101 that is desired. You dont want to completely eliminate a fever, since it is a good thing. Good luck.

there could be several things wrong, he could be having problems with constipation as well. has he put things in his mouth and swallowed them and have a blockage.. most of the answers you have been given are good ones and I agree that a second opinion is in need as soon as you can, high temps can cause brain damage in children.

please take him to a different DR. before it's too late.
well i dont feel good, ive had "fever"of 102.3 for a week, im feeling bad, but i dont think i need to go to the doctor, he could be heavily astmatic and the heat is causing stress on hislungs and its hard to breath, so he tries hrd to breath, and gets a fever and gets tired
The same exact thing happen to my two year old son as well. It lasted for three days. The fever reached 104 once. His lips would turn blue and be shaking because of the chills but be sweating at the same time. We took him to the emergency room when he first got the fever. And the doc thought he might of caught meningitis. Later the test came back negative. The doc said it is just a viral infection in his system, and to just keep giving him motrin and tylenol. She said to switch it up because the motrin can hurt his stomache. Before u know it the fever was gone within those three days. It was kinda weird because it just came and went all of a sudden.
I have been a pediatric nurse for 5 years and have worked with the best pediatricians in GA you can take my advice or leave it this will be a long message.
A 103 temp is not the end of the world Never take your child to the ER for a temp like that unless he is lethargic or dehydrated. Fevers are good for us they help fight infection.
A fever is not considered a fever until it reaches 100.5 F . Most people are taught anything over 98.6 is a fever this is NOT TRUE.
I know this is hard to accept but its true it is the #1 most arguable comment made by the doctor or nurse to a parent.I promise its ok.
You may want to speak to the doctor again I am not aware of anydoctor that would not call this a virus.
You need to be on the look out for him not eating or drinking(sore throat) well or any rashes, stomach ache, headache, swollen tonsils this could be strep throat or it could be pharingitis which is a virus.
Although they can develope a rash with a virus whis is very normal the doctor will be able to tell the difference and there is in office test to check for strep .
On a different note all together one of the most common causes of fever by infection that is uneasily diagnosed is a urinary tract infection, which i need to ad is very uncommon in boys but it can happen. Ask him if it hurts when he pees. The doctor can dip his urine in the office to see if there is evidence of a UTI.
He could just have a cold .
It really all goes back to how high the fever is if it has stayed 101 or higher unless on motrin he needs to be seen again but anything less than 101 I would keep him at home.
Now this is the mommy answer from me.It sounds like the fever is bothering you more than him and we as parents need to be able to step back and look at what ever is wrong woth our children and say is that (runny nose )bothering him or me more usually you will get it is bothering you more! This is a hard comment to type.I am not being sarcastic or mean
