What makes your white blood count become elevated?

Question:
My husband was to have surgery the 13th of June and was postponed until the 25th of this month. He has had 2 more blood works done adn can not seem to get it down to a safe level for surgery. He has been on antbiotics and cant fight this. They say his ears are red and infected but felt fine until we have been putting ear drops in and now he cant hear very well out of 1 ear and seem to hurt now.

Answers:
infection, stress, dehydration . all of these can cause elevated high WBC counts. You already know he's got an ear infection. if he's been running fever, then he's probably dehydrated too. Illness causes great stress on the body. In addition to the antibiotics, he should be getting lots of rest and plenty of fluids.

Have they done blood work to determine the infecting organism? There are a multitude of antibiotics, some work on only certain types of organisms. If they haven't found an exact organism, they may at some point consider starting him on a broad spectrum antibiotic, which work on several different types of infecting organisms at one time. The side effects can be heavy, so the infection has to be pretty bad for broad spectrums to be considered.

Hope this helps. Good luck :-)

Any infection can cause sepsis if the blood travels through a new wound. Wait if you can till your hubby is infection-free. Lots of sad infection stories I've heard. Immediate, no time to say goodbye. Good Luck!

White blood cells help fight infection in your body. A normal white count is between 4,500 and 10,000 cells per microliter. Causes of an elevated white count include:

Infection
Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, antibiotics or anti-seizure drugs
Severe physical or emotional stress
Chronic bone marrow diseases such as a myeloproliferative disorder
Acute or chronic leukemia
A high white count doesn't identify a specific problem. Instead, it may indicate an underlying condition and should be evaluated by your doctor.

elevated white blood cell count means infection is present making surgery too risky. need to find the cause of the infection, cure it and then surgery is possible. An infection can cause white blood cells to go up. He should be seeing his doctor so that they can work on getting it to safe levels.

The body is fighting off the ear infection. White blood cells fight infection.

WHITE BLOOD CELLS - Leukocyte. White corpuscles in the blood. They are spherical, colorless, and nucleated masses involved with host defenses. Normal white blood cell counts are variable with age and sex. Normal adult range is 4,500 to 11,000 cells per cubic millimeter of blood. Slightly higher counts are seen in children. Elevated counts can be seen in cases of inflammation and infection.

usually thats a sign of sometype of infection. HIV is one of them but Im sure not the case here. White blood cells help to kill off the infectius organisms. I think they produces enzymes to kill the oranisms. But im not expert, I just remember from biology class. You should talk to an ear nose and throat dr or someone who specializes in where the problem is suspected to be in. usually when you have a temp.that usually indicates that you have some kind of infection.the body creates these wbcs so they can fight the infection.an elevated count of these in the system simply means the body is fighting back.your husband too is going to need some antibiotics to help with the infection.
