Does Ambien help you get a refreshing night of sleep or is it just like Nyquil and any other OTC Sleep Aid?

Question:
I want my energy back so I can actually engage in a taxing exercise regiman. I don't want a hangover effect. I just want to wake up feeling energized and ready to take on the day.

Answers:
ambien works well for me but I only use it as needed so I'd give it a try. Also lunesta works well but may be habit forming if used all the time. I was unaware ambien was available otc as I was given a prescription for it. It's changed since first introduced , when I first tried it when it came out it was like taking lsd the first time I used it, after that it was fine. Both work better than nyquil and the other sleep aids available.

Other Answers:
Don't use sleep aids. They all come on saying "THIS is one isn't habit-forming. That's not true. Anything that helps you sleep is habit forming. Anything. Don't get dependent on a stupid drug.
Yes, Ambien will give you a good night sleep, without that groggy side affect of the OTC's, but it REALLY knocked me out. Not good if you have little ones who may need you in the middle of the night.
I've never tried Ambien myself, but I've a lot lately on how it's addicting for some. A proper dose of sleep medicine should not make you too drowsy if you get 7-8 hours of sleep.

I have taken Lunesta before. It worked like a charm for me. I also tried Rozerem which did absolutely nothing.
I have taken Ambien for almost 15 yrs and i wouldn't take anything else. The first couple of mornings you might feel a little sluggish, but that was all for me. GOOD LUCK!
I have taken Ambien and i think its amazing i finally had a full night sleep and woke up in the morning normal not groggy like other sleep aids but everyones body is different hope this helps.

Ambien is a good drug for a sleep aid, but a prescription is needed. This drug is best indicated for individuals who have difficulty falling asleep rather than early morning awakening since it only remains in your system for 4hrs. However, it still should provide you with 6-8hrs of sleep, and since it's out of your system in 4hrs, you shouldn't have any "hangover symptoms" like those experienced with other sleepers. Ambien is usually prescribed PRN(which means as needed) instead of routine (which means at a scheduled time daily). Ambien can be habit forming, but is usually only prescribed for acute problems with sleep, and not to be used every night. Those with drug or alcohol issues should be aware of the habit forming aspect of this drug. This is also a good drug for pregnant women since it's a Class B drug and deemed acceptable for pregnancy. I've taken this drug periodically and have had great results. Remember, after taking this drug it usually starts taking effect in 20-30 minutes so be in bed following adminstration since its sedating effect can affect balance. Good luck, or maybe i should say Good night. -a psych nurse
