I have three ideas. 1. if you got a lot taller this past year, it could be just plain growing pains. You have to wait until your muscles get stronger before the pain goes away. One way to help if this is the case, is to stretch the quad muscles every day. leg weight lifting helps as well but avoid leg extensions, that will only put more pressure into your joints.
2. if you injured it playing basketball you may have damaged your meniscus (cartilage). Strengthening your leg muscles and stretching also helps here, and again, avoid leg extensions. you may have to get arthroscopic surgery to fix the problem.
3. I'm not a doctor, I'm a soccer coach. Go see a doctor. I'm guessing the doctor would get an MRI. If he doesn't see any problem, he will tell you the growing pain thing, or he will recommend you go see a physical therapist. If he sees a problem he will recommend the appropriate action for your ailment.

You need to call your doctor and schedule an MRI. If it's torn cartilage, ice won't heal it. My husband had to have outpatient surgery for his torn cartilage. Make an appointment with your doctor. Make sure to tell him/her you want an MRI. Just an Xray doesn't always show everything. Hope this helps! Good Luck!
