OK, who has had to give in and buy 1% reading glasses already , and have to use then to see fine print ?

Question:
I could always hold a book up to a few inches from my face to read ,now it is getting that blur ! Why can't our arms be made to extend a little further as we get older ?

Answers:
yes it is called, presbyopia,or Loss of accommodation of powers up close, the inability of the eye to focus sharply on nearby Objects , it is a physiological condition, IE the Crystalline Lens, has a great deal of add power , many many diopters. it starts to lose some of its elasticity. usually from the start of advancing age say 38- 48. i have noticed that people who are Farsighted, start at a earlier age than Nearsighted people, the crystalline lens also later in life can develop cataracts also that is easily cured today by implanting a synthetic lens by a MD. don't fret presbyopia. is easily fixed by either reading glasses or bi focal or progressive lens also many contact lens wearers use bifocal lens or mono vision contact lens. most people are lucky and buy over the counter reading glasses they usually start at a + 1.oo diopter and go up to a + 2.75 diopter in strength . but many people can't they might have astigmatism or other visual disturbances that would warrant them to visit a optometrist. or doctor of optometry ,OD. it can be a real pain in the rear! but everybody pays the piper, and has to give in sooner or later! like i tell many people you can try to put the book on your feet! and read! : )

Other Answers:
I got contacts and, alas, still have to use reading glasses. Once you hit age 40 the lens in your eyes don't accommodate, or change shape, like they used to, so even if you have 20/20 vision (including those who have had corrective eye surgery) you will have to have help to read up close. Welcome to the wonderful world of aging!
