can my foot be sprained or broken if only minor swelling?
Question:
Answers:
ice is the recommended immediate treatment for sprain or strain, fracture or break. next is heat for a sprain or strain. the fact is that sprains or strains sometimes hurt much more than a small fracture. by tomorrow it is likely there will be more swelling or tightness depending on how badly the strain or sprain. if a fracture, it may be treatable, but if left untreated could take care of itself over time anyway. however you would likely have much discomfort for months while this happens. if you really are trying to avoid medical treatment at this time and want to do something yourself, then try buying a type of splint at the drugstore which will reduce the stress placed on the foot when you walk. also skip the vanity and use a cane or crutch. wrapping the injury can be a problem if you are not versed in this type of thing. by putting a wrap on the strain/sprain then you have to allow for further swelling. if your initial wrap is to tight then as the tissue swells the wrap will act like a tourniquet and may cause further serious injury to the tissue. a fracture can achieve infection. in the military i have treated many sprains, strains, and minor fractures, although i was a trained corpsman and medic, not a doctor. i always had the injury followed up by a physician when we came out of the field.. if i determined that the injury needed evacuation from the field then i could call in a helicopter. my treatments always resulted in a physician later examining the injury.
there is a high degree of possibility that you are dealing with a fracture and since you aren't in the field would be wise to get an xray at least, then go from there.

A slight sprain.
Right now all you can do is ice and elevate your foot..if in the morning you are having pain and difficulty walking then you will need to see the doctor and get an exam and maybe an xray to see what is wrong..a sprain can hurt as much as a mild non displaced fracture..You can also take Motrin or Tylenol for pain just as long as you are not allergic to the medication.. go to a podiatrist & get an xray they will tell you what's wrong. Feel better soon.
It could be a hairline fracture. I fractured both my big toes in cheerleading and I had swelling and just a bit of bruising. But it really hurt to walk and I did a lot of limping as well.
