Anybody ever cut a tendon in their finger? and if so, how long did it take to heal?
Question:
Answers:
There are two answers here, it depends on the severity of the injury. If the tendon has been completely severed, a short, minimally invasive surgical procedure is necessary. Tendons are under tension, similar to rubber bands in the body. When severed, the two ends will pull away from each other the same way they would if you put a rubber band under stress and cut one side with a pair of scissors. In surgery, an incision is made to expose the area from tendon nub to tendon nub. Using a high tensile suture such as Ethibond, the surgeon will bring the two ends as close together as possible and sew them together. He may also use a "patch", a collagen scaffold such as Pegasus to wrap the repair and promote healing. Very successful surgery with minimal risk, (anesthesia being the biggest risk.) This type of injury will not heal on it's own, in fact, if left untreated the tendon ends will atrophy over time and eventually a cadaver tendon would have to be used as a replacement.
If cut into, but not severed, the tendon will heal on it's own, but you must do your best to immobilize it for a few weeks.
Good luck!
I cut the tendon in my index finger and it took about a year before everything really felt like it was working normal.
