Signed a non-compete contract with a agency denying any related employment for 1 year or 50 miles away.?
If I accept similar employment within that time frame, liable to a penalty of $50,000.00.
Answers:
It depends on your field. Many, many non-competes are not worth the paper they are written on. Courts are also very sympathetic to the employee VS the employer in most cases. Providing your former employer can not show actual damages from your accepting a similar job within the 50 miles or 1 year (stealing clients of theirs etc), they will almost never prevail in court.

depending on where you are, your state may have a different opinion & an attorney can help you get around that clause. They will never even try to enforce it, too time consuming and costly. And they would probably never win in a court of law.
