What exactly is bactine and how do you pronounce it?

I was reading a book, and someone asked for bactine. I'm guessing it's some kind of disenfectant? What exactly is it, and how do you pronounce it? Bac-teen, or bac-tine(long i)?

I've always heard it said "back-teen". I think it has an antiseptic and a mild anagesic or numbing agent. This would be a really good question for a phamacist!


It is pronounced bac-teen, it is an infection protection first aid liquid. I keep it in my cabinet and use it regularly. I am reading it from the bottle so I will tell you what it is for. Bactine is a first aid liquid disinfectant. It is said to be no sting but as all liquids it stings some. It is pronounced Back-teen. I dont reccomend it I would rather use neosporin ointment. Bactine is the trademarked name of a first aid liquid produced by Bayer. Its active ingredients are Benzalkonium chloride, an antiseptic, and lidocaine, a local anaesthetic.
