When I was a kid I used to get them on my hands all the time, and we had to use the "compound w" and stuff over and over, all the time, and it was about as uncomfortable as when you have a wound that's healing that gets really itchy, only it lasted all year. I filed them off with a pumice stone in third grade.

If you go to a doctor's office, for about $50 (you'll spend it in a year on products to remove a couple stubborn ones) they paint them with acid. Your doctor will tell you "When this stings, it's hitting real skin, so wash it off with soap." You do, and within 24 hours, the acid-eaten thing just falls off. Much faster.
