I cannot find any information on enlarged red blood cells?

Question:
I was told they are caused from alot of drinking in the past.Is there any others cause? Like lead in the water? Do they ever change or cause other problems like blood clots?

Answers:
Macrocytosis is the medical term for enlarged red blood cells (erythrocytes). Doctors may also refer to this as macrocythemia. Macrocytosis can be due to many factors. Common causes include:

* Vitamin B-12 deficiency
* Folate deficiency
* Liver disease
* Side effect of certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs
* Increase in red blood cells (regeneration), which occurs to correct anemia, for example, after blood loss

Macrocytosis causes no symptoms and is usually found incidentally on a routine blood test. Treatment of macrocytosis is directed at the underlying cause.

Other Answers:
It is called macrocytosis. There are several causes. Liver disease from drinking too much is one cause. Vitamin B12 deficiency; folic acid deficiency. They do not cause blood clots. Check with your doctor to find out the cause in your case, because it is extremely important to try to correct the underlying cause if possible, to prevent other complications.
