I have found a few websites that say that lidocaine is bad for sunburns. Is that true?

Question:
I know that lidocaine is in many aloe gels. But the doctor websites say not to use it. Which is true?

Answers:
No. That's not true. Lidocaine, a topical numbing solution, is used in many treatments of minor skin irritations. It doesn't do anything other than to help ease the pain on the surface of the skin. The aloe helps to moistureize the burn so that it hopefully doesn't peel to bad, or doesn't peel at all. I'd recommend a aloe with lidocaine in it and use it 3-4 times a day. Making sure the burn is kept moist/hydrated also helps ease some of the pain. Some of the best aloes with lidocaine are Banna Boat or Solarcaine. An even better treatment is to try not to get burned.

Other Answers:
I had severe sun poisoning just this past week. Lidocane HELPED me a lot. It didn't "heal" the sunburn or anything, but it did make most of the pain go away.
Also, I didn't peel nearly as bad as where I'd put aloe on before my mom (a NURSE) told me to use the lidocane.
So, I say use it. It really helps 'freeze' the pain. I don't know if lidocaine is bad or not but the most effective products are ones that contain 1 to 2 percent menthol and 3 to 4 percent camphor. Menthol is the synthetic form of a chemical found in peppermint and camphor is the synthetic form of a chemical found in camphor trees. I can't say for sure menthol and camphor are better than lidocaine but I know from experience they work very well and the sunburn always heals very quickly.
