What are shin splints?

Question:

Answers:
True shin splints are actually micro fractures in your tibia (bone in your lower leg). They develop from repetitive trauma such as jogging on hard surfaces. They have nothing to do with the muscles in your leg. You can have sore muscles from running as well, that is usually a build up of lactic acid from not stretching properly when you are done running, or tendonitis. Tendonitis is usually only sore around the ends of the muscle, so you would not have pain right on the center of your shin, it would be closer to the knee or ankle. The treatment for shin splints would be ice and rest. Get better shoes and jog on softer surfaces. For sore muscles you would need to stretch more and you might try massage. Tedonitis you would want to rest, ice, and you can get tedonitis straps for your knees at any drug store. They help take the stress off the tendon and give it time to heal.

Other Answers:
they are caused by damaging the muscles along the shin. they can be caused by running, changing ahtletic shoes (ones that may not support your foot as well or have good shock absorption), power walking, or any other repetitive shock to the foot. they are extremely painful! they can be relieved by taking something like advil to help the inflammation, and staying away from activities such as running and power walking for a while until the pain subsides.
