What are the side affects of the prescription drug soma along with oxycontin ?

Question:
My husband has two herniated discs in his back and he has been Taking Soma, precribed by the doctor along with 40mg of oxycontin. Sometimes he seems out of it. I was worried that these two drugs are to much for him. Surgery is imminent, we are just waiting for the go ahead by the pain specialist.

Answers:
Oxycontin is an analgesic, similar to morphine prescribed for serious, chronic pain. Some of the side effects are sedation- and respiratory depression (if too much is taken) and constipation. With any narcotic, drug dependency is a concern, but if used correctly can effectively help patients with chronic pain have a better quality of life.

Soma ( carisoprodol ) is a skeletal muscle relaxant- and it works on different pain receptors than the Oxycontin, so the drugs are not the same. There are no known drug interactions, but the side effect to watch out for is excessive sedation. Also, you should speak with your MD or pharmacist for more info- they can put your mind at ease!

Other Answers:
