Can I get an infection from swamp or lake water?

Question:
There was a turtle on a bridge of a major highway this morning, so I stopped to move it back over to the grassy area. When I picked it up, water poured out of the shell and all down my leg. I went home and cleaned my leg with alcohol. I took a shower and scrubbed and cleaned it REALLY well. Could I still get an infection? What signs should I look for?

Please only answer if you have a serious answer.

Answers:
If you washed in soap and water and used alcohol, chances are you killed anything that could possibly give you a skin infection. Unless you have open wounds, I wouldn't worry too much. If you did have open wounds, watch for signs of infection that include: pain, reddness & swelling, drainage. soap and water is the standard wound protocol for minor skin wounds as it kills 99% of all bacteria.

OH.thanks for saving the turtle! You probably scared the pee out of him!

Other Answers:
It may have been water or urine. They urinate as self defense. You have done everything possible to disinfect yourself & I wouldn't get too worried. Make sure to wash & dry your clothes. A fever or reddening of the skin (which you have probably done w/the alcohol & scrubbing) would be signs of infections. Thank you for being a good Samaritan to the turtle.

You seemed to have taken care of it well and pretty fast. I doubt you'll get an infection. I cant be 100% sure though. you can get an infection from this scenario u described, but it is not very likely unless you had some sort of skin breakage when you poured the water on yourself (like an open wound)

i would be more worried about getting bitten by the turtle!

yes!there are all sorts of bacteria and parasites that can and will make you very ill.there are some that can even enter you body thru you skin and pubic area.i learned this buy watching the discovery channel. YES absolutely. There are endless microbs, bacteria germs and virus' If you have a cut or nick in your skin you could get an infection.

I don't think so, usually only something like swimmers itch from swimming in a lake, which would be unlikely if you showered immediately after swimming, but you should be fine. See you doc if a rash or irritation develops. Good luck.

Any water which is not clean is a home for germs and backteria , also all kkind of cretures which is counted as a host , so you have to be carful and make sure that it is clean specially that lake water is counted as a sweeted water not as ocean and sea , the amount of sault there prevent these kind of things , so make sure THE WATER IS CLEAN

well, be it turtle pee or swamp water, I'd keep it out of open cuts or scrapes -
anyways, dude - check it out -
I used to move turtles, too.

see the lil' dude truckin his slowass way across the road
You figure, 'Not many cars, but this poor critter just may encounter his death on this roadway.'
Picked up every turtle I saw on blacktop.
No good, I guess.
They lose their way.

Safe to say he was lost anyways :)
