My brother has a partially collapsed lung.it was spontaneous. What will happen next? What caused it? Fix it
Question:
Answers:
The collapse or caving-in of all or part of a lung occurs when air gets into the area between the lung and the chest wall. If this happens, the lung cannot fill up with air as you take a breath. It may occur spontaneously without a known cause, often in healthy people. Medically, the condition is known as a pneumothorax .
Often, collapsed lung is due to rupture of an air pocket or bleb (fluid filled sac) in the lung. Changes in pressure during diving, flying, or even stretching can cause a bleb to break. Asthma or infections in the lung also can cause a rupture.
If only a small part of the lung is collapsed, it may heal by itself
You dont say if he is still in the hospital,or being treated,so what will happen next is hard to answer.
Other Answers:
Well, he will probably have to go on a weight-gaining diet. If the collapse is small, he'll be fine and it will most likely heal on its own. If it is large, he will probably be admitted to the hospital and several possibilities will be considered. If your brother is not breathing well and the chest x-rays conclude air in the pleural space, he may be given a chest tube to release the air allowing the lung to inflate.
Spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) usually happens in people that are tall and extremely thin. That's why I mentioned he may need to gain some weight.
Don't be overwhelmed. He'll be taken care of.
