Should I be concerned about my ankle sprain? What should I do to prevent future occurrences?

Question:
I have recently sprained my ankle for the 5th time in the last 12 years. I have always had weak ankles and they have rolled easily. This last time was just playing soccer and I jumped up and when I landed it rolled, nothing was under my foot, it just gave out. I went to the doctor right after and he said it was a high ankle sprain, but he could see all the previous chips in my bones from previous injuries. He also stated one of these is quite large behind my achilies tendon. It has now been a week and the brusing I have gotten is amazing. I have never had so much brusing, and it is mainly above the round thing on my ankle, about 3 inches above it, and below it along the base of my foot. All the times previous this I never got any sort of bruising. Should I be worried about this? The talk of surgeroy has also been mentioned: 1 to remove the large chip from one of the previous injuries, 2 to tighten my tendons to prevent future injuries. Please advise on what u think of this.

Answers:
I am a podiatrist and sometimes deal with ankle injuries. If you have bruising one week after injury it's normal. You should get a MRI to rule out damage to a tendon or ligaments to the ankle. You should be wearing an ace wrap, ankle brace, or stiff walking boot called a cam walker to minimize motion in the ankle joint and make your pain less. You should also be taking NSAIDS like 600 mg Ibuprofen every 6 hours as needed for pain. Icing the ankle with ice 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off will help too. If pain persists, an injection could be done to the joint. I can't exactly tell what your diagnosis would be if it's just a tendonitis or an avulsion fracture in your ankle. I'd get an MRI before surgery and possibly get a second opinion. I'd wait a few more weeks also before considering surgery if I were you.

Other Answers:
strengthen your ankles by trail running (when you're healed) the off road running and uneven surface strengthen supporting muscles & tendons.
Removing a large chip is certainly a good idea. Have you discussed physical therapy, and low impact excessive with your surgeon?
sounds like you need surgery or at least to permanently wear a ankle brace for the rest of your life. My husband rolled his ankle at work about 4 or 5 months ago and this was his first bone injury in life a chip broke off of his ankle.he is 45 and he is still having to wear a brace.but not every day anymore.
Get a second and third opinion before sugery and go to all sites you can find on the internet for information
