Shoulder impingement syndrome is defined as a painful entrapment of the supraspinatus tendon, subacromial-subdeltoid bursa, and/or the biceps tendon between the humeral head and the coracoacromial arch.
Impingement syndrome is when the acromion(bone over the rotator cuff) develops a spur. This spurring closes down the space between the two, causing pain and inflammation of the bursal tissues(bursitis).

If left untreated,a rotator cuff tear may eventually occur.

See your orthopedic surgeon when this condition starts to interfere with daily activities.

The pain and swelling can be relieved with a relatively minor procedure called a decompression acromioplasty. Most surgeons complete this through a shoulder arthroscopy.
