Can you get Celiac that is not genetic?

Question:
Is it possible to get celiac disease even if it does not run in the family????

Answers:
It might have skipped generations and been undiganosed before hand. People are only just realising what coeliacs is and it isn't nice when undiagnosed. In previous generations, people did not talk about their bowel habits so no one ever knew.
Yes you can. Around 10-15% chance of developing it if a First degree relative (mum/dad/sibling) already has it, but other high risk groups include: Diabetics (type 1), thyroid disease, Downs Syndrome. Some people have what you might call an allergy/sensitivity to gluten - 'IgA deficiency', and can develop coeliacs disease without the above risk factors.

Symptoms can include: weight loss, tiredness, diarrhoea, abdo pain, nausea/vomiting, mouth ulcers, but can also include lots of other bits and bobs.

Don't try and diagnose yourself - it's almost impossible! Go and see your GP if you're worried.

Ta ta for now.
Yes, it is possible, even if you dont know of another family member that had it. It usually doesnt show its ugly self till later in life. Its hard to get the diagnosis, becuz docs dont know enough. It takes a couple intestinal samples. I have a good friend with it, and it didnt show up in her till she was in her 30s. She suffered for a long time till a doc discovered it. You will have to eat Gluten free foods.

I dont think you just develop it, I think it IS genetic. You could of had a distant relative way back when that was ill with it, and never knew.
