What gauge IV catheter is recommended for use with Conscious Sedation?
Question:
Answers:
For most conscious sedation cases, an 18g should be plenty.
It could be done with a smaller catheter, but an 18g allows easier administration of blood or IV fluids if needed.
If the patient's veins can handle it, I always suggest an 18g. A good RN can start an 18g, causing no more discomfort than with a 22g.

usually 20 or 18, nothing too much larger than that, I would think.
