salt is out?

Question:
My doc just told me I should avoid all salt. I live in the desert and they say to use salt to keep the electrolytes in balance. I also happen to like things a little salty. What should I do?

Answers:
Your doc is right, you should avoid salt, because it's a source of sodium, which is bad to overdose. Also soy sauce and other sauces, because they usually are made with the usual salt. People living in your area are right in a way - living in a desert makes your electrolytes disbalanced. The solution is to use low-sodium salt or salt where sodium is replaced with potassium (here in Europe you can buy it in pharmacies). And the best solution would be to refuse salt and to keep your electrolytes in balance using much mineral water (non-carbonisated) or vegetables and fruits (especially water-mellons help to restore this balance).

Other Answers:
soy sauce. has the same taste. just not as bad as salt

use the low sodium salt, when salt is to be cut out of ur diet, its mainly because of the high sodium, which is also in energy drinks, so just get the low or no sodium salt, its not as rich but say what, it works as salt! :) Try salt substitutes.
Or Mrs. Dash.
Hot sauce.
Liking salt on your food is an acquired taste. You might find that if you stop adding salt to you foods, you may grow to enjoy this new taste as you can really taste the real flavor of foods. eat less than 2000 mg of sodium per day.Ask your doc about salt substitute. It helps.Throw away your salt shaker. You should not use salt substitute if you have kidney disease or hyperkalemia
