Nose piercing question?

Question:

I am going to get me nose pierced but my parents are not in agreement. (I am a Freshman in college but still am dependent on my parents) I have been told that the clear retainers should not be used until the piercing has healed. Is this true? What would happen if I used a clear retainer anyway?

Answers:
It is preferred to use surgical steel until the site heals as this reduces the likelihood of infection. If you would like to use a clear retainer this is likely to work and the risk of infection could be virtually eliminated using a prescription antiobiotic ointment called mupirocin which is an inexpensive generic. Piercings remain a curiosity to many adults but they are quite common and I am certain that your parents will accept you for who you are.

Making permanent holes in your face? I would eventually get bored with it and feel angry that I was stuck for the rest of my life with a hole/scar in my face.

I had my tongue pierced and used a clear retainer because I wasnt allowed to have my tongue pierced at my work. It worked for me and almost a year later it is completly healed.

Your parents are right. This is something you are going to regret. Even when you take the piercing out (and you will once you start looking for a job after college) the scar will always be there. Sometimes kids do things JUST because their parents don't want them too. Let me tell you something..once in a while..parents are actually RIGHT. And they are about this.

It's bad to change your jewelry before a piercing has totally healed - it can damage the hole and significantly slow down the healing process. For this reason, it isn't a great plan to switch out your piercing jewelry for a clear retainer. Nostril jewelry is particularly bad - if you have a stud with the swirly screw bit inside it can really rip you apart if you take it out before the piercing is totally healed. Even if you get a ring, tugging on it to get the bead out, and then to get the ring itself off could REALLY piss off your new piercing. And a nostril isn't something you want getting infected.

If I were you, I'd wait to get it done. Have you talked to your parents about it? My mom always took comfort in the fact that piercings are not necessarily permanent - that if I ever decide to take mine out they'll heal and leave no more than a tiny scar. If nothing else, you can try telling them that you want to get this out of your system now while you're still in college, instead of waiting until you're out in the real world trying to get a job (although it didn't give me any problems - I even kept my nose ring in when I worked at the state department, and never had trouble getting other jobs because of it either).

I actually have my nose pierced and so does my sister. I have had it done for about 8 months. And my sister has had hers for almost 2 years. She was so excited when she could change it and took the stud out and now she uses the other ones and she is on almost a daily basis loosing them. I however have the original one in and it doesn't even bother me. It is also herd to notice where as hers because I think she changed to soon it looks king of gaudy
