What illness comes about *or symptoms* when you drink contaminated water?

Question: I accidentally have been drinking tap water tonight, and find out that our area is under a boil order. I have thrown up several times already. I have had about 3-4 cups est. My question I guess, is the illness temporary? ex-does it leave when I vomit, or does it develope into a cold of some sorts? Thanks for answer in advance I can't seem to find any info on search engines.
