Can anyone tell me why the Dr. did this ?

Question:
OK a brief history I was hit by a drunk driver the pain is in my low back, neck, and hips. Shoots down my right leg. Ive already had 4 surgeries and 2 series of epideral blocks. I want pain meds that take away the pain long enough to walk I try to walk 3-4 hours a day after work. Its about the only exercise I can really get anymore. I also dont want them to make me loopy. Ive been on hydro too.
My new Dr perscribed 5 mg oxy to be taken ...2 pills q 4-6 hours. Taking 2 would make it 10 mg. These only lasted about 2 hours then the pain came back full force. He then perscribed 10 mg CR 1 q 12 hours. Isnt 10 mg still 10 mg ? because they still only last about 2 hours. Why did he do this?

Can anyone in a simular situation help me out. What meds helped you....lasted through your exercises? What mg?

Im also on skelaxin. I think I need to get back on the neurontin the leg tingeling is getting worse again , will oxy mix well with neurontin?

Answers:
Sorry to hear about your case.

You have been taking REGULAR oxycodone 5mg, 2 tabs q4-6h. What he is doing is giving you oxycodone CR (generic Oxycontin) 10mg every 12 hours. The oxycodone CR is a long acting medication. What it does is constantly release oxycodone into your bloodstream for up to 12 hours.

Usually severe pain like yours requires a long acting drug to bring the general pain level down, and then short acting drugs (regular oxycodone in your case) to relieve any spikes or "breakthrough" pain.

What we usually do is see how you do on the long-acting oxycodoone by assessing how much pain you're still in despite the medication. We will figure out how much "breakthrough" oxycodone you've used also. Based on that, we made calculations based on those things and reported to the doctor what we recommend for dosage changes.

Basically if your pain is still not controlled, you could have your long acting oxycodone increased by your doctor gradually and then re-assess. If you have side effects, then you can go a different route.

Good luck and hope you feel better.

It could just be that particular Dr. You can always get a second opinion your the one in pain. Have you tried massage?
He most likely though that your body had become resistant to Oxy's effects. 10 mg for one compund can be 100x more powerful than 10 mg of another compound
