How do you know if you have nerve damage?

Question:
A couple of days ago I fell and cut my knuckle and right at the end of my hand (above the wrist)
on thesame side as my knuckle. Anyways, I had
to get stitches for both cuts and the doctor said
that the cut wasnt very deep but I am still having
a hard time opening my hand and shutting it.
What do you think?

Answers:
You may have had slight trauma to the nerve, you didn't say which side of your hand (thumb-side, center, inside wrist, etc) so I can't say which nerve might be involved. The difficulty you're having is most likely a result of the injury and repair. Give it more time and continue to exercise your hand. Nerve damage can result in both numbness and paralysis but I doubt you have anything to worry about in this department. That this is a circulatory issue is unlikely.

If over the next 5 days you have little or no progress or a worsening, see your health care provider for further evaluation. You'll be going back in a week for suture removal anyway. Report progress to your doc at that time. And pay no attention to the alarmists who want you to see an orthopod or any other specialist. There's no justification for that at this time.
Opening and closing doesn't have anything to do with nerve damage.
