Any workout recommendations for someone who had a herniated lower back disc (L5). I Prefer cardio and weights?

Question:
I would like a weight routine and a cardio routine.

Answers:
Hyperextensions are good for the lower back. Supermans are good too if you do not have the equipment for the hyperextension. You can try rows as opposed to the Superman for a little variety (done from the same position, just row back with your arms). Hmm, Deadlift and Romanian Deadlift do fantastic work for the lower back but they require strict form for those of us already injured. Also, I would strengthen with body weight exercises before moving onto either of those. Good mornings work the lower back as well and can be done with or without weight. Once I got things under control running did not bother me and I found it to be very beneficial for keeping my back feeling good.
You need to consult your doctor - I have had 2 surgeries for the same thing and you really need to watch anything that causes stress to that vertebrae/disk.
Find a McKenzie certified Physical Therapist if it is causing you any problems. If a MRI is taken of 30 year olds who dont have any back problems at all 30% will have a herniated disc. For the most part disc problems usually respond better, if not always, to extension exercises. That includes back extension and also leg extensions. Usually flexion exercises will make it worse. I would suggest going to the McKenzie therapist.
