what do you do to fix a torn/strained groin muscle?

Question:
i was doing yoga and i felt a pop on my left side groin area. now my left thigh feels super tight and my flexibility is limited. what should i do to help heal this? do i HAVE to go to the doctor?

Answers:
Most muscle strains will competely heal in 4 to 6 weeks. There is nothing you can do to make yourself heal faster. There are lots of ways to slow down the process. Ice for the first 72 hours. If you start to notice bruising (echymosis) under the skin, you have probably torn not strained the muscle and you need to go get it checked out. If you smoke, stop until the injuries is healed. Smoking can slow the healing process by as much as 15%. Long slow painfree stretching will help. You will need to hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds and repeat it as often as you can. If you stretch until it hurts you will prolong the injury indefinitely. Groin muscles are used everday and will take a while to stop hurting. Grin and bare it. This too shall pass.
