The teacher has told me each day around 1pm my son becomes extremely pale with bags under his eyes. Why?

Question:

He's in Year 1 primary school.
She said he looks healthy when he arrives/in the morning then around 1pm looks anaemic with bags under his eyes.

Serious answers with what could be the matter please.

It sounds to me as if he is dehydrated. Is he drinking enough water during the day?

I should take him to the doctor for a checkup.

could be a blood sugar problem. any history of diabetes, with him or in the family? see a doctor for this one.

I am just thinking he might be anemic (doesn't mean he doesn't eat..)
or maybe because he used to sleep at that hour last year?

Could be pollen or the lack of afternoon naps which schools should give out to children their age.

He may be lacking energy - nothing to do with amount of sleep. Make sure he has a proper breakfast every day - something like porridge, not too much sugar, and some fresh fruit.

Also if he has a packed lunch ensure it has energy boosting food (not sugary or fatty) such as wholemeal bread, salad, humous, nuts and an apple for instance.

If he has lunch at school, suggest he has a 'proper' meal with meat, veg etc. and not just a plate of chips

If none of the above apply, then it could be allergy-related. Doctors call these dark rings 'allergic shiners'. Often if accompanied with pale skin it's indicative of a possible dairy problem. Probably best to discuss with GP.

It sounds like you should bring him to a doctor and get a professional opinion. If nothing else, a good physical and blood and urine test might give you some anwers.

Are you sure he's sleeping properly at night?
I don't necessarily mean he's sitting up watching telly or playing on his playstation (although I'm not ruling that out). There could be a genuine reason for him not sleeping properly.
It does sound a lot like fatigue.

Have you had him checked for possible diabetes? You can get a urine test at any drugstore or WalMart type store. The urine strip tests for high levels of glucose, which could account for this anemic look. Did she say what color the bags under his eyes resemble? Also, do you notice this on weekends when he is not in school?

He is probably just tired school is new to him and he perhaps gets up earlier. I would take him to the doctors to get him checked out. Hope everything is ok for you I would not worry too much kids soon look rough if they are tired.

Was he still having a sleep in the afternoon before he started school, does it happen at home on the week-end?
If 1 is yes and 2 no then I wouldn't worry too much it probably means by 1pm he is tired!The bags under the eyes would indicate that rather than anaemia.
Find out what he eats at lunch-time (He may not be eating as much as he should) If he has a packed lunch what is he bringing home? He may need more carbohydrates.They release energy slowly and would stop him becoming tired.

See your GP though he's the best person to help!

Poor little fella, he is probably sleepy. Its after lunch and he probably could use a nap. Maybe he will get used to school.
I would put him to bed at nite as early as possible and let him sleep as late as possible in the morning.

Based on what you describe (looks great in the morning) I suspect he is encountering some sort of environmental antigen that's not agreeing with his immune system. Sounds allergic in nature. Any family history? Could be something at school, dietary intake, pollen, dander, etc.

Get him to the doctor and highlight that his teacher has pointed this out (ie you're not being over anxious) it may be a sugar problem in which case they can test him for diabetes etc. You are not doing anything wrong by being worried and I'm sorry if people on here haven't taken you seriously. And don't feel you are wasting any1's time get him to his doctor.
