Kidney removal is a very serious operation, but fortunately you have two kidneys, so you can carry on with the spare. Is kidney failure in the remaining kidney a common complication? No -- but that can depend upon what the reason for removing the first kidney was.
If there is a condition, such as nephritis, that could affect both kidneys, then then second one could fail, but that would not be a result of removing the first one, but the progression of an existing pre-condition.
Removal of one kidney puts more work load on the kidney left so i think there is increased chance. but i think if one takes proper food and enough water, the risk is much less. As the major problem would be stone formation.
such person must drink more water , more than 12 glass per day and avoid foods that can contribute to stone formation, like those containing more calcium for calcium stones and protiens for urea crystal formation.
But more imp thing is to drink plenty of water so that kidney could filter dilute blood easily.
