can i give blood if i do a tattoo?

Question: i have no kids and was told that if i do a tattoo i won't be able to donate blood. that gets me afraid because i have nieces and nephews that are my blood type, and i wouldn't want them to be sick and me not give them blood.

Answers:
It is a reason for temporary deferral for one year. As you may have contacted something but it is too early to show up by blood test. Don't worry about your nieces and nephew they can get blood from someone else. You may not even have a compatible blood type.
