Trying again - Insomnia after surgery?

Question:
I had major surgery 3 weeks ago, and ever since then have been suffering from insomnia. I no longer have any pain or anything, and have avoided having afternoon naps, but I'll go to bed at 10 and am still awake at 4am. Periodic minutes of sleep are filled with vivid dreams. I'm exhausted beyond measure. Has anyone else experienced this after surgery? I'm wondering if it's partially because of the general anaesthetic? I apparently had a little trouble coming out of it as they said they put me under farther than normal (& took a long time to come out). Any suggestions to what I can do to get some ZZZZ's?? (other then meds...I have a condition that I take enough pills for). Thanks!

Answers:
I've always found the best to help sleeping is warm milk with a grating of nutmeg. There is something in the milk (can't remember what) that when it gets heated it acts as a natural sedative. The nutmeg is just for taste.

Avoid anything with caffeine in the evening (chocolate, coffee, tea etc).

If no joy after a week, go see doc.
Mel, contact your doctor and see if you're having after affects from the surgery.

I've personally found that using lavender (linen spray, body wash) is a natural relaxer.

Good luck to you.
