the dog in the night time is about aspergers syndrome, a disorder on the autistic spectrum. i work with autistic children and the spectrum is so wide ranging that this is really not the place to look. you need professional advice from a doctor. good luck the curious incident book is about a guy with aspergers which is on the autistic spectrum but generally not as pervasive as autism itself. Autism means that your child will lack a 'theory of mind' in that they find it hard to imagine things e.g., they can't put themselves in other people's shoes or play like other children. they will also probably have obsessions with certain things which makes them feel safe and if these obsessions are disrupted it can be difficult for them. they are also usually hyper sensitive to noise, touch and smell etc. self harm is common. Autism is a label which can help but also hinder.
