Is over-the-counter cold medication more effective if used consistently or only when needed?

Question:
My cold is tolerable most of the time and I haven't taken medication yet. However there are times (at night, and the morning, etc.) when my symptoms are worse and I plan to use the medication I just bought. Is it best to only use it every 4 hours consistently, or only if needed? Will either method get rid of my cold faster?

Answers:
There are arguments for both ways or using the meds. I prefer to use decongestant just during the night so that sleeping is easier, but thats purely personal.

I don't think any otc meds should be taken regularly.
