My boyfriend is tired all the time. He is seeking methods to help. What is causing this and what can he do?

Question:
He tends to want to sleep a lot but is still tired after he wakes up. His father has sleep apnia, but we think my boyfriend could possibly be ADD. He has never been diagnosed with either.

He is looking into taking caffine pills, but I feel those are bad for several reasons. I am under the impression that caffine can end up making you even more tired than before, is this true?

He says his body feels tired a times, even though he has slept and sometimes his body is rested but his mind feels tired.

He is a college student that commutes and he either can not get enough energy to get up and go or feels like he is going to fall asleep in class.

What are these signs of? What kind of doctor should he see and what are some options and solutions out there for him?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Answers:
Yes...stay away from caffeine pills or any other similar drugs!

There are literally hundreds of reasons for fatigue. Consider:

1. Is it new, or has he always had it?
2. Is he getting at least 8 hours of good sleep each night?
3. Is he eating properly? Getting proper nutrition and not a lot of junky food?
4. Is he getting adequate exercise?

If yes to above, then he may have a medical problem that requires a doctor's help. Does he have any other symptoms besides the fatigue? These would help determine what to do next as well as diagnose the problem.

eg...Diabetes and Thyroid problems are common and definitely cause fatigue, but do present a number of other symptoms in addition to fatigue.

Could also be ADD/allergy related, which is usually linked to something in one's diet.

If he smokes, this could be the problem. Depression also causes people to want to sleep a lot and be lethargic.

In Canada, we have to see a GP first and he sends us to a specialist if necessary, so imagine it is the same where you live.
Depression can cause energy loss and sleepiness.
