Does physical therapy prevent the recurrence of injury? Are there studies to prove this, if so, which ones?

Question:

Answers:
no. its up to you to be careful so you need not therapy again.
Wow, what a loaded question! Yet a very good one. The field of physical therapy has been making significant efforts to put evidence into its "arsenal" of treatments to prove they are effective and worthwhile. Unfortunately, when one considers the vast array of conditions we see and the difference/lack of standardizations in techniques, the results can become muddled.

To say the very least, as far as preventing recurrence of injury, I would have to say that it depends on the type of condition and the health of the patient. I performed a search on CINAHL and cross-referenced the following terms
1. physical therapy and injury and recurrence
2. physiotherapy and injury and recurrence
3. physiotherapy and effectiveness and injury prevention
4. physical therapy and reinjury

I did manage to get a few hits that were helpful. In general, physical therapy was found to be effective in the long term mangament of chronic back pain. Back schools in combination with physical therapy was found to be effective in the prevention of back injury. Physical therapy was not found to be effective for preventing shoulder dislocation in people who have chronic dislocations.

The biggest hit I had was physiotherapy, effectiveness, and injury prevention...I did not browse all 214 hits I had.

The problem with a lot of research is that studies are not often long-term, multiple variables are tested, and there is great variability among providers (in terms of treatment).

A subject as broad as this would best be investigated by specific injury as some respond well, and others "the jury is still out."
physical therapy is a waste of your time and money....i advise you not to go
