Do you get a stiff neck prior to the headache? If so then try a hot water bottle or by trial and error a cold pack placed in-between your shoulder blades. Personally on the medication side I haven't found anything that cures the pain. However prevention has helped me.
Allowing time to de-stress. Hot baths after a stressful day. Massages.
As to what causes migraines- The capillaries within the brain become forced with blood which in effect causes the pain.
This can be either restricted or full.
The aura that people experience is in affect a minor hallucinogen caused by the vessels expanding and then restricting causing the brain to become 'confused' this is translated by visual disturbances, smelling things that aren't there and/or ringing in the ears.
I really hope you find something that works for you.
Ooooh consider dietary aspects. Keep a diary see if there's a common trigger!
knocking yourself unconscious
dont know what causes them, but excederin migraine is amazing--1/2 hour and its gone! Good luck!
"Aura" is a physiological warning sign that a migraine is about to begin. Loads of reasons why people get them, i do!
this was pretty helpful. see here---> http://www.clevelandclinic.org/health/he.
Sleep and/or caffeine work best for mine.
i think honey helps with these..
Hi there, I would suffer from migranes every day, finally my doctor had me go to a neurosurgeon to see what he could do for me, and he prescribed Imatrex which I take now in cases of really bad ones (which I hardly have anymore.yay!) and Topamax which has been a lifesaver. I take one 100mg pill a night before I go to bed as a preventive. The neurosurgeon diagnosed me with chronic migrane and tension migrane. There are actually 4 different types of migranes out there. The Topamax is pretty expensive (even with insurance) at $35, but it is so worth it to be pain free. I highly recommend it. PS-my neurosurgeon also said that the over the counter medicines like excedrin migrane and tylenol migrane, etc. can actually make your headaches worse so he made me quit taking them once I got started on the Topamax. Good luck!
I suffered from migraine all my life (and I'm an oldie) pain killers worked once or twice until I became immune to them, then one doctor prescribed Imigran tablets that work 100% for me, they are not painkillers but they alter the blood vessels. Brilliant.
an aura is a warning sign that a migraine is coming. it could be a visual or sensory signal. visual meaning you see lights or wavy lines. sensory like you get pins and needles on parts of your body or your face will go numb. and these auras happen 5-30 minutes before your migraine kicks in. talk to your doctor, migraines with auras can be a sign of heart disease. Migraines can be casued my a lot of things like stress, straining your eyes, fatigue or a blocked sinus.
i use to have bad migraines before. i wore glasses. i had my eyes lazered and as a positive side effect, no more migraines.
it is different for other people, but mine is a spacey feeling along with slight pressure in my head and behind my right eyeball.
excedrin migrane works well for me and it's over the counter.
imitrex is also very good but it's by prescription only.
