This morning when I woke up the little ball that hangs down in the back of my throat ..?

Question:
This morning when I woke up my throat was severly sore and every time I swallowed it hurt like crap. I opened my mouth and looked in the mirrow and the little ball thing that hangs down in the back of my throat is swollen it is HUGE. When I swallow it goes down my throat and when I dont swallow it is just resting on my tongue. It is very annoying and hurts really bad. Has anyone ever had this happen before? What is this? What caused it? and How long will it be like this??

Answers:
Hey! I'm not the only one! That happened to me on Christmas Day 6 months ago. I had to go to the hospital because I was gagging so much.
The thing that hangs is called your uvula. It's actually pretty rare for it to swell so large that it touches your tongue but it's usually caused by a bacterial infection.
Try ibuprofen to reduce swelling first. If nothing improves, you may want to see a Dr.
If you go to the hospital, the Dr. might give you a steroid in the form of a pill or a shot. At least, that's what my doctor did. Take the shot if you go; it works faster. The swelling went down to a comfortable level within 12 hours, but it took 4 days to feel normal again. The wierd part was that I didn't really have any other cold symptoms other then a sore throat and the uvula swelling.

My son had this happen. The DR. said it was just irritated probably due to sinuses. I gave decongestants and it went away in a day or two.
Um, yeah, it's a sore throat, and it happens a lot.

It can be caused either by bacteria or a virus, and the only way to tell which is for your doctor to do a throat culture. If it's a bacteria, the doctor can give you antibiotics to clear it up. If it's viral, then you just have to wait it out and drink plenty of fluids. Go see your doctor, because if it is a bacterial infection, it could get worse without treatment.
I think it's tonsilitius (spelling?) in any event, GET TO A DOCTOR! Something is obviously wrong. Now go on, call the doctor, get to it!
It's not a problem. When your body is tired and your tonsils are infected with a bacteria, it is swollen so it can fight it off. You might be catching a cold. It does hurt a lot. It usually goes away in 2 to 3 days, keep yourself clean, drink lots of water, even though it hurts. and vitamin c!
Hope you feel better.
go to the doc
Sounds to me like you've got tonsilitis. You probably should go to the Dr. and find out for sure. Don't mess around with this.
