Web MD is probably the best place to look. But if you have undiagnosed rash you are probably better off going to see Dr as they can diagnose and prescribe medications (oral and topical) to ease pain and discomfort. Also the young and old NEED to see physician as even mild cases can develop to very bad cases quickly and bacterial infections can set in quickly causing life threatening issues.

itch
Because poison ivy/poison oak rash is a "dermatitis" type reaction, the actual rash can very from person to person. Most have a slightly raised red or even blistered rash that is exceptionally itchy.
The soap product called "Technu" can prevent the rash from spreading and various over the counter creams, lotions, etc can be used for the itching.
If you aren't sure what your rash is, I would recommend seeing a doctor before starting any at home treatment.
Well so funny you ask this question. My husband has poison ivy right now! it started with just an itch then it proceeded to all over his body itching, we were out by our trailer home and he got it from out there. Maybe from walking the dogs , the dogs can carry it and when you touch your dog the oil from the plant is on their coat and once you touch the oil it seeps into your pores and wham!! You got it. there are serious cases and some are not, my husband has red rashy spots ,some are big some are small but it spreads if you don't put stuff on it ,i bought him aveeno bath oatmeal, aveeno soap, aveeno lotion, and aveeno body wash.
