Answers:
sounds like you have a problems with the peroneal tendon. i have a great website for you to check out, myfootshop.com. it has wonderful articles regarding foot/ankle conditions, products and a discussion forum. you may want a doctor to look at it to xray or do MRI to rule out rupture of the tendon or any fractures. use the source as direct link to site.
How old are you now? When does it hurt (when you put weight on it, when it's cold outside, after you've been walking all day)?
The ankle and surrounding tissues are really a marvel of complexity. The way the bones distribute weight and how the circulatory system gets blood to all your toes, and how the lymphatic system removes waste - it's just amazing.
The reason I ask is some things heal with time, some things don't. If this happened last week I'd say try to keep it elevated, put some ice on it, and see where you're at in a week or two.
If you're 30, it clicks and hurts all the time, you've got another problem. You'd be well served to talk to an orthopedic (bone) specialist. My wrist clicks when I rotate it becase one of the tendons slips out of its track and rubs against the neighboring bone. It doesn't usually bother me, but I occaisonally get tendonitis in that wrist.
Tendonitis is a blanket term for inflammation of a tendon. A tendon is a type of tissue that connects muscle to bone. (ligaments connect bone to bone). The pain could be from inflammation of the underlying tissue, which could be muscle, ligament, tendon. What's causing the inflammation? The joint could be arthritic from a variety of causes (poorly healed break, aging, lack of calcium, etc).
Try over-the-counter anti-inflammatories and see if that help. I've had pretty good luck with Alleve (Naproxen sodium) and Advil (Ibuprofin). You might want to stay away from traditional pain-relievers (aspirin, tylenol) because they can mask the pain and encourage you to use the injured limb, making the injury worse.
If it still hurts after a few days of relaxed use, ice, and anti-inflammatories you should definately see a doctor.
Hope that helps,
